WEATHER or NOT

Talking about the weather is easy. People talk about it all of the time. Attempting to paint the weather, however, is a challenging undertaking. The weather is an elusive subject matter to deal with in painting. In a climate like the one in Chiang Mai, it is constantly shifting and changing, often right before our eyes.

Not all landscape paintings are about the weather. In fact, I have found that identifying the weather as the subject in painting is almost as difficult as trying to paint the weather myself. Is the subject the landscape? Is it the color of the sky, the character of the clouds or the rain? Is it the quality of the light at a particular time of day? All of these elements are affected by the weather, but how does one actually paint what the weather feels like, the smell of the air, or the sound of the rain? How does one capture the heat of summer in Chiang Mai, or a monsoon rain in September? We have wonderful examples from art history that pave the way for such an undertaking. Paintings by Claude Monet and J.M.W. Turner come to mind.

This exhibition is a portrait of the weather that consists of a group of artists who were selected for their unique rendition of this subject. The exhibition includes both abstract and realistic works that represent various lenses through which the artist sees and ultimately depicts the weather. Some of the pieces capture the sensation of the wind or the rain. In some works you can feel the weight of the air or the temperature at the time it was painted. “Weather or Not” poses a question about painting, about what it can be, and it’s ability to communicate the sublime qualities of our atmosphere. The paintings can be experienced individually and as group and allow the viewer to decide whether or not the paintings are about the weather…not.

I would like to thank Meo Jai Dee Gallery for inviting me to create a project for their space. I would also like to thank the students at Chiang Mai University. I have enjoyed every moment of working with you this year.
